A return to community theatre never felt so good with this joyous, funny, nostalgic and heart-warming musical comedy, Freaky Friday. Adapted from the 1972 book by the same name, and the three Disney film adaptations (including the 2003 movie starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis), this musical version (developed for licensing by Disney Theatrical Productions) features music and lyrics by the Pulitzer Prize and Tony award winning composers of If/THEN and Next to Normal, Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey.

Produced by the newly launched but already prolific independent theatre company, Theatricalthis community-minded not-for-profit is dedicated to providing opportunities and access to musical theatre for those who might not normally have the means, across performing, costuming, make-up, set design/build, stage crew, lighting and sound. Founder and Executive Producer is former Triple R broadcaster, Andrew Gyoper, whose inclusive casting policy welcomes performers across a diverse range of cultural groups and ethnicities, so that every role more accurately reflects the diversity of a modern Australia.

“Theatrical believes that community-made performing arts is a great way to bring people together. To share skills, socialise and to promote positive mental health,” says Gyopar.

Directed by Bronte Regos Thiele, Freaky Friday stars Stephanie Powell and Lyla Digrazia as Ellie and Katherine, the mother and daughter duo who are at odds with each other until they magically swap bodies for a day, thanks to a set of heirloom hourglasses.

From the outset this musical exceeds all expectation as you are drawn into the worlds of both lead characters. The show is laugh out loud funny, with a quick-paced plot, witty dialogue and even wittier acting. And the singing is outstanding, featuring impressive lead vocals and enthralling ensemble harmonies. Powell is captivating as the teenage girl trapped in her Mum’s body; her physical comedy and facial expressions are hilarious, her powerful vocals utterly amazing and her ability to show vulnerability, especially when highlighting topics of grief and sadness, display a multi-faceted performer who delved deep into a character to give us dimensions and not just a clichéd teenage angst facade. A truly impressive, dynamic and memorable performance.

Lyla Digrazia was a stand out as the awkward Mum in her teenage daughter’s body, having to deal with school, friendships and… boys! She managed to play equal parts shocked and appalled adult and soft-hearted maternal protector. With her silky smooth vocals and brilliant acting, Digrazia helped us to see why we should show empathy to others no matter the generational gap.

Michael Gray was another remarkable vocalist, seizing the close of his first scene as an audible intake of breath was heard from the audience as we marvelled at his brilliant singing.

Tach Sutton as Torrey, the highly strung assistant with a heart of gold, was slap-your-knee funny, encompassing such brilliant comedic timing and perfect characterisation, that she became an instant fan favourite .

With choreography by accomplished Broadway dancer and choreographer, Bridie Clark, coupled with catchy tunes and absolute bangers that you’ll have playing on high rotation in your head for weeks to come, this musical has it all.

Special mention to Nathaniel Calleja as Fletcher (who had to take on several different voices thanks to his puppet side kicks), Thomas Martin as Adam (“Adaaaam!”) and Kate Thurkle as Savannah (who pulled off the mean girls vibe with aplomb) – their acting was flawless and they played their roles to perfection. Every cast member was brilliant in this production, with not one missing a beat. It was a perfect harmony on and off stage, with everyone’s dedication and hard work shining through in this opening night performance, of which they should all be very proud.
