In a statement sent worldwide, the accounting firm of the Academy Awards, Price Waterhouse Coopers, has taken responsibility for the Best Film Award being wrongly named by hosts Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. In their emailed statement sent at 7.20pm (AEST) on February 27th, 2017, the firm stated, “We sincerely apologize to ‘Moonlight’, ‘La La Land’, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected.”
The internet rumour-mill has been going wild over reports that Emma Stone, who won for Best Actress in ‘La La Land’ in the award before the Best Film announcement, claims she was still holding her winning envelope. Price Waterhouse Coopers are “currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.” Will we ever get to see the envelope read out by Beatty and Dunaway? We’ll see how the story progresses, in what is easily the biggest mistake in Oscar history.
