NATALIE WOOD – Interview with the Designer of ‘Something Else’ Clothing

1. WHAT CAN PEOPLE FIND IF THEY LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE?

People can find something unique, ethereal and fun designed from the heart. I really like to design to different aesthetics so that really anyone could come and look through a Something Else collection and find something they could wear. It’s like designing for my own multi faceted personality – one day I like to wear pretty, the next day grunge, followed by comfy oversized then into slick clean designer feel. I like to melt all of this into the designs and collections.

2. YOUR LABEL, SOMETHING ELSE, HAS RECEIVED HUGE SUCCESS BOTH LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE LABEL’S CREATIVE PULLING POWER THAT HAS GENERATED SUCH ADORATION IN BOTH MEDIA AND STOCKISTS?

I think at the end of the day Something Else has been designed with a huge amount of creative integrity and lots of love. And I think this really shows in the clothes and in the way they feel when you put them on. We have also created something new in the market by really marrying St style sensibility with an aesthetic and finish known more in high-end fashion. We offer beautifully designed and cut clothes with a unique edge, at an affordable price.

3. WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS ABOUT MELBOURNE STYLE THAT IS SO CAPTIVATING?

Melbourne style is captivating as there is a real understanding and appreciation of fashion there. It’s dark and edgy. I think Melbourne fashion is about really great layering and they do it so well. Girls can really step outside of the boundaries and push their styling a lot, and not look silly. It’s not so body conscious, and I think there’s a real feel for individuality. I also see a real support and appreciation of local designers there as well. Melbourne has this unique dark serious side to it that I really like.

4. WHAT WOULD YOUR ULTIMATE ACCOLADE IN TERMS OF FASHION APPRECIATION BE?

To build a prosperous and successful fashion brand that is internationally known and stocked in the finest department stores around the world.

5. YOU HAVE HAD MANY ROLES – FOUNDER OF LABEL SAMPLE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR INSIGHT AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS. WHAT IS NEXT FOR NATALIE WOOD?

I have had many roles and I’m one for creating a lot of change and new challenges. I don’t really like to sit still too much which is both a blessing and a hindrance. I think now that I have a new full time focus on Something Else I can completely nourish and tenderly develop what has been created there. Design wise, I’m really excited as my team is so creatively amazing and our product is getting stronger and stronger every season, and we have a great buzz in the team which is intoxicating. I’m also looking forward to further developing our accessories and starting to look at the idea of adding in menswear, which has always been a passion of mine. I think also just to look at balancing all of this, with living a really well rounded life full of love and time for friends and family.
